Basin-wide estimates of loggerhead turtle abundance in the Mediterranean Sea derived from line transect surveys

چکیده

Loggerhead turtles are a globally vulnerable species of marine turtle. Broad-scale patterns distribution and abundance can provide regional managers tool to effectively conserve manage this at basin sub-basin scales. In study, combined aerial shipboard line transect survey data collected between 2003 2018 were used estimate throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Approximately 230,000 linear kilometers effort, from seven different surveying organizations incorporated into generalized additive model relate loggerhead density on segments environmental conditions. Two spatial models estimating density, abundance, generated – one long-term annual average covering 2003-2018 another summer 2018, when basin-wide survey, Agreement Conservation Cetaceans Black Sea, Sea Contiguous Atlantic Area Survey Initiative, was performed. Both adjusted for availability bias using dive tagged with time depth recorders. Mean estimated as 1,201,845 (CV=0.22). The 789,244 covered smaller area than average. These estimates represent first in not based demographic models. predicted similar distributions, higher northern Adriatic central basin, Tyrrhenian south Balearic Islands. Lower densities eastern Aegean highest areas generally did coincide previously established adult turtle foraging areas, which typically neritic, indicating predominantly predicting oceanic where most effort occurred. Juvenile comprise population, but care must be taken these they may accurately predict neritic subadult loggerheads often found. Despite limitation, major step forward conservation planning understanding species.

Aerial survey abundance estimates of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Pelagos Sanctuary, northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Aerial line transect surveys, totalling 16 590 km, were performed in winter and summer 2009 in the Pelagos Sanctuary, NW Mediterranean. A total of 207 loggerhead sea turtles were sighted, with only 9 sightings during the winter. In this season average raw ‘surface’ density (i.e. animals at or near the surface) was 0.002 turtles km–2, and on the basis of line-transect analysis, we estimated 237 ...

Accounting for responsive movement in line transect estimates of abundance

A method is developed to account for effects of animal movement in response to sighting platforms in line transect density estimates using data on animal orientation. Models of expected distributions of animal orientation show that presence of responsive movement is determined by the ratio of animal sightings with angles of orientation in the third quadrant relative to the first quadrant. The d...

Gas Exchange in the Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Pulmonary CO diffusion capacity ( D L C O ) , lung volume (VL), oxygen uptake (Vo ) and pulmonary blood flow (QL) were measured simultaneously in the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) (8—11 kg) using a gas rebreathing technique (syringe pump ventilation). Calculated D L C O and Vo values in the loggerhead turtle are approximately twice those of non-varanid reptiles and about 25 %...

Seabirds At-Sea Surveys: The Line-Transect Method Outperforms the Point-Transect Alternative

Methods: We tested whether modeling of detection probabilities, and density estimates with their coefficients of variation obtained from the point-transect method provided more robust and precise results than the more commonly used line-transect method. We subdivided our data by species groups (alcids, and aerialist species), and into two behavior categories (flying vs. swimming). We also compu...

Description of cloacoscopy in the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)

The aim of the study was to describe cloacoscopy in the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and to evaluate its efficacy in clinical practice. Cloacoscopy was performed on 31 turtles, 23 females and 8 males. Thirty minutes before anaesthesia, meloxicam (0.4 mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly. Turtles were anaesthetised with a combination of 0.04 mg/kg dexmedetomidine and 4 mg/kg ketamine a...
